Topic: WA Workforce and Health System
Topic Summary: Health services in Western Australia (WA) are faced with many challenges including a rapidly growing and ageing population with longer life-expectancy, and an increasing burden of chronic conditions driving a growing demand for healthcare services. These challenges are coupled with a medical workforce shortfall, a lack of absolute and relative medical practitioner numbers required and an inequitable distribution of medical practitioners across regions and specialties.
WA Health Medical Workforce Report in 2016 highlighted the medical workforce issues faced by the WA health system. An overall estimated shortfall of 1,450 medical practitioners across all medical specialties in WA was projected by 2025. Estimated WA trained specialist supply will not meet demand in 18 specialties by 2025 with the resulting risk of not being able to meet health service needs and compromising safety and quality of care. This included significant projected shortfall of 974 general practitioners. In addition, psychiatry has been identified as a specialty that is in undersupply nationally. WA has even fewer psychiatrists per 100000 population (12.7) compared with the national average (13.7). The critical shortage of psychiatrists in WA is even more marked in rural, regional and remote areas. Action is required to address this in order to meet the needs of people in WA and to deliver reform to mental health services.
Reliance on international medical graduates (IMGs) will continue to address short to medium-term shortfalls for the system but CoVID has worsened the situation.
Without intervention, based on current trends, supply will be insufficient to meet projected healthcare needs in those specialties. How can the WA Government collaborate with the sector to ensure the future of the workforce?
